Wrestling Sixth After Day One of Southern Scuffle

GREENSBORO, N.C.—The Lock Haven University wrestling team is tied for sixth with Virginia Tech after the first day of the two-day Southern Scuffle, hosted by UNC-Greensboro. LHU has 26.5 points 19.5 off the pace set by No. 7 University of Minnesota. The Bald Eagles are currently ahead of 17 teams, including No. 23 Rider University.

Weight-by-weight recap:

125- Freshman Obe Blanc (Naples, Fla./Lely) went 1-1 on the day, defeating East Stroudsburg University’s Robert Ramos before falling in the quarterfinal round.

133- Junior Jim Collins (Jonestown, Pa./Northern Lebanon) went 0-2 on the day.

141- Freshman Brian Ellis (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) dropped his first bout before taking the next two by major decision in the wrestlebacks. Freshman Matt Fittery (Denver, Pa./Cocalico) went 1-2.

149- Junior Joshua A. Medina (Las Vegas/Pima C.C.) fell in the quarterfinals after wins over Cornell University’s Mike Reisch and Navy’s Matt Gulosh.

157- Sophomore Seth Martin (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove) posted a 2-1 record, making it to the quarterfinals and dropping a tough 2-1 decision to Cornell’s John Cholish. Junior Matt Marquart (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford) put together a 2-1 ledger of his own, finishing the day with a 9-6 victory over the Citadel’s Jacob Allman in the wrestlebacks.

165- Junior B.J. Mikeska (Derry, Pa./Bloomsburg University) fell to No. 11 Matt Nagel of Minnesota and then rattled off two wins in the wrestlebacks, including a 10-1 defeat of teammate Rory McCoy (Hughesville, Pa./Hughesville) who ended the day at 0-2.

174- Sophomore Carlos Ponce (Hialeah, Fla./Hialeah Miami Lakes) finished at 1-2, his lone victory over Citadel’s John Buck.

184- Senior Justin Johnson (Wyalusing,Pa./Bloomsburg University) was the highlight of the tourney for LHU thus far, advancing to the semifinals by going 3-0, scoring a 8-3 victory over No. 14 Alex Camargo of Kent State University on the way. Sophomore Mike Metzger (Reading, Pa./Governor Mifflin) has put together a nice tournament of his own, going 2-1 with two major victories.

197- Freshman Ben Hepburn (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock) rebounded from a tough 2-1 loss in the pigtails to get two wins in the wrestlebacks, both by major decision.

Hwt.- Freshman Jamie Nagel (Shade Gap, Pa./Mount Union Area) went 1-1 with a victory over North Carolina State University’s Brendan Paez. Junior Tim Meyers (Mill Hall, Pa./Central Mountain) went 0-2.

The Bald Eagles begin tomorrow’s action at 9 a.m. with third-round wrestlebacks.
