(Kutztown,
Pa.) The
Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania wrestling team
finished as the runner-up at the 2002 Pennsylvania State
Athletic Conference Wrestling Championships being hosted by
Kutztown University at Keystone Hall Arena.
The Bald Eagles scored a total 141.0 team points,
bettered only by 147.0 points by this year’s champions
from Edinboro University. Lock
Haven did, however, repeat last year’s performance on an
individual level, as half of the LHU squad again comes home
with the crown at his respective weight class, and nine of
ten wrestlers finished no lower than third.
“The guys wrestled great,” said LHU Head Coach Carl Poff.
“I don’t know if there was anything more we could have
done, with five champions, three third place finishes and a
second place. Every
guy did at least what he was seeded at.”
“I am
proud of our team – in the last round tonight, we wrestled
nine times and won eight matches,” continued Poff.
“It was a total team effort, and to come away with
five champions for the second-straight year is a tremendous
tribute to this program and to all their hard work and
dedication.”
“I am
especially pleased for James LaValle, who had the
opportunity to come to PSAC’s, and comes home now with the
gold,” said Poff. “It
was an awesome performance by him -- just a tribute to how
much of a team player he is – and I think it is great that
he was rewarded for his unselfishness throughout his career
with this win tonight.”
Repeating as PSAC
champions were senior Trap McCormack (Loganton/Bald Eagle
Nittany) at 125 pounds, sophomore Mike Maney
(Clarence/Bald Eagle Area) at 141 pounds, and JaMarr
Billman (Easton/Easton Area), this season at 157 pounds. Capturing their first conference crown included The Haven’s
James LaValle (East Hanover, N.J./Hanover Park) at
149 pounds and Josh Millard (Mill Hall/Bald Eagle Area)
at 184 pounds.
Sophomore
174-pounder Ed Pawlak advanced to the finals before
finishing as the runner-up, and three other LHU wrestlers
earned third-place finishes and all-conference honors. Winning their consolation championship bouts were Victor
Jackson (Hampton, Va./Poquoson) at 133 pounds, Chris
Haines (Gettysburg/Gettysburg) at 165 pounds, and Avery
Zerkle (Urbana, Ohio/Graham) at 197 pounds.
Lock Haven’s runner-up finish is the 17th
such result at the PSAC Tournament, and the fifth under Head
Coach Carl Poff. With this weekend’s victory, Edinboro now owns six team
titles. Lock
Haven remains the conference leader with 19 team crowns.
