LHU Soccer Advances in PSAC Tournament With 3-0 Win Over Kutztown

(Kutztown, Pa.) -- Three unanswered goals by the Lady Eagles secured the PSAC tournament quarterfinal victory over Kutztown University (14-4-2) this afternoon on Kutztown’s Memorial Field, advancing them to the semifinal round.  Lock Haven, the sixth seed in the tournament, will travel to face No. 2-seeded West Chester University (11-4-3, 9-1-2 PSAC) on Friday, November 7.  
          Sophomore defender Kimberly Thompson (Ephrata/Ephrata) broke the scoreless tie early, scoring off a corner kick by freshman forward Holly Homsher (Millersville/Penn Manor) at 15:56 to give LHU the 1-0 advantage.  Before the close of the half, Lock Haven was awarded a penalty kick after a hand ball in the box.  Senior midfielder Joanna Bisphan (Hamilton,New Zealand/Hillcrest) converted the kick to boost the lead to 2-0 by the intermission.
          The Lady Eagles kept the Golden Bears off the scoreboard again in the second half to preserve the lead, allowing only six shots total over the course of the game.  With just under 14 minutes remaining, The Haven’s Holly Homsher won the ball then threaded it to the right side to freshman Jen Meassick (Endwell, N.Y./Maine Endwell), who beat the keeper with a shot into the corner of the net for the 3-0 lead.  
         Lock Haven’s Brandie Kessler (Bethlehem/Saucon Valley) played all 90 minutes, recording her first shutout win of the season.  Kutztown’s Mandi Johnsen also played the entire game, registering one save. 
        Millersville University defeated Edinboro University, 2-0, in the other quarterfinal contest. Millersville, the No. 4-seed, will face top-seeded Slippery Rock University in a semifinal match on Friday.
