LOCK HAVEN, Pa. –
Backs against the wall and one player down, the Lock Haven University
women’s soccer team (6-6-2, 3-1-1 PSAC West) would not
stop attacking, eventually evening No. 3 Slippery Rock
University (9-0-2, 5-0-1 PSAC West), 2-2 today at McCollum
Field. Junior Caiti Sultzbach (Lititz/Warwick)
scored the game-tying goal.
The match started off well
for the Haven, as Sam Engard
(Mechanicsburg/Mechanicsburg) stole a pass from goalkeeper
Karrine Riggins for the first goal of her college career,
giving LHU a 1-0 halftime lead.
Defensive lapses in the
second half allowed SRU’s Julie Kirwan two goals in the
course of two minutes and the Rock had a 2-1 lead with
under 28 minutes left.
To make matters worse,
Brooke Rangi (Kawerau, New Zealand/Kawerau College),
the team’s leading scorer with six goals, was involved in
a scuffle and ejected with 13 minutes left, causing the
Haven to play 10-against-11 for the remainder of the
match.
The team turned up the
intensity, causing it to look like they had the advantage.
Diane Wall (Green Lane/Pennridge) took a pass at 30
yards out, turned and dealt to Sultzbach who dribbled
right to the top of the goal box and fired over the
outstretched arms of Riggins to knot the score.
“The intensity and attack
was encouraging today, coming from behind while being a
man down,” head coach Peter Campbell said. “We want
to build on this intensity as the rest of the season goes
along and hopefully we’ll see (SRU) again in the
playoffs.”
Momentum continued for the
Haven for the rest of regulation, as they had three corner
kicks in the last six minutes, but were unable to put one
in the net.
The Haven defense helped
allow for the comeback, led by Jenn Meassick
(Endwell, N.Y./Maine Endwell) who shut down the Rock’s
leading scorer Sarah Arsenault (12 goals) not allowing the
speedster a single shot until the second overtime.
Sultzbach, Engard, Rangi,
Wall, Campbell, Meassick and the rest of the Lady Eagles
are back in action at LIU-CW Post on Saturday, Oct. 9 at 2
