When choosing a laptop, you should be sure that it meets the technical specifications designated by the University. You can find the spec sheet under Laptop Purchase page. It's good to have a laptop that has several GB of memory or more, has a good video card and (if you're planning to carry it around campus) something thin and light.

Essential programs to have on your laptop would be the Microsoft Office suite which includes: Microsoft Access, Word, Excel, Publisher, and PowerPoint. You should also have the latest version of Adobe Acrobat. Microsoft Security Essentials software is a must. You should only use the provided version of MSE, which will work with Cisco Clean Access. (Otherwise, you can't connect to our network!)

Lock Haven University does not directly sell laptops. However, the Laptop Purchase page includes links and information on purchasing a laptop.

Students are permitted to purchase any brand laptop of their choosing, but keep in mind that Lock Haven University is partnered with Lenovo and Dell to provide special discount pricing to LHU students. Apple offers student pricing as well, but cannot have hardware repairs performed on campus.

Lock Haven University supports four operating systems: Windows 7, Windows 8, MAC OSX 10.7 (Lion) and Mac OSX 10.8 (Mountain Lion).

In most cases, a student is expected to know how to use the required software. Regardless of experience level, it is recommended for students to take CISC150 (Introduction to Computers) for skill improvement with the Microsoft Office Suite.

Yes, the University has free downloads that you can get online.

We recommend certain models that may be cheaper, but they may not be. We are partnered exclusively with Lenovo, Dell and Apple. Purchasing through us will ensure that your laptop meets our recommended technical specifications, but we have a spec sheet available in case you've decided to purchase your laptop elsewhere.

The University Bookstore store has the latest version of Microsoft Office for a discounted price. The University Bookstore's website can be found here.

Not always. LHU recommends you verify whether the laptop you purchase has a warranty. Accidents can happen and being prepared will save you time and money later on. Also, not all warranties are equal. Most will not come with accidental coverage so please check what is covered before buying.

Lock Haven University has coverage over 99% of the campus. Currently, the traditional residence halls do not have wireless that reaches all rooms. Fairview Suites has wireless coverage for all the rooms..

If you live at home, check with your homeowner's insurance carrier to make sure your computer is covered under the existing homeowner's policy. If you are a renter, it is highly recommended that you purchase renter's insurance. If neither of these options suit your situation, talk to your computer manufacturer about insurance policies they might offer.

Details can be found in the orginal Task Force Report.
