STEP FAQ
What is STEP?
View Student Technology Enhancement Program (STEP) details. (NOTE: This is the intial program announcement/informational document from 2007--some information, such as recommended laptop brands, has changed.)
What kind of laptop should I buy?
When choosing a laptop, you should be sure that it meets the technical specifications designated by the University. You can find the spec sheet under Laptop Purchase page. It's good to have a laptop that has 2 GB of memory or more, has a good video/audio card, and (if you're planning to carry it around campus) something thin and light.
Are there certain programs I need to have on my laptop?
Suggested programs to have on your laptop would be Microsoft Office, which includes: Microsoft Access, Word, Excel, Publisher, and PowerPoint. These programs will be essential. You should also have the latest version of Adobe Acrobat. Also, McAfee Anti-Virus software is a must. Information on downloading McAfee and other programs can be found on this site. You should only use the provided version of McAfee, which will work with Cisco Clean Access. (Otherwise, you can't connect to our network!)
How can I purchase a laptop through the university?
Lock Haven University does not directly sell laptops. However, the Laptop Purchase page includes links and information on purchasing a laptop.
Which computer manufacturer should I go with?
Students are permitted to purchase any brand laptop of their choosing, but keep in mind that Lock Haven University is partnered with IBM (Lenovo) to provide special discount pricing to LHU students. Apple offers student pricing as well, but cannot have hardware repairs performed on campus.
What’s the recommended operating system to have on my machine?
Lock Haven University supports three operating systems: Windows XP, Windows Vista, and MAC OSX 10.5 (Leopard).
If I don’t already have the computer skills will I be expected to know them or will I learn them?
In most cases, a student is expected to know how to use the required software. Regardless of experience level, it is recommended for students to take CISC150 (Introduction to Computers) for skill improvement.
Does the University have software programs that I can download for free?
Yes, the University has free downloads that you can get online.
Is it cheaper to buy through the University?
We recommend certain models that may be cheaper, but they may not be. We are partnered exclusively with Lenovo and Apple. Purchasing through us will ensure that your laptop meets our recommended technical specifications, but we have a spec sheet available in case you've decided to purchase your laptop elsewhere.
Where can I purchase the recommended software if it's not provided for free?
At the University Bookstore on campus, or can you can purchase it on the University Bookstore's website.
Does a warranty come with my laptop?
Yes – The recommended models of Lenovos come with a 3-year Accidental Coverage warranty. Apple warranties start at 1-year, non-accidental, but can be upgraded for an extra fee. If you choose to purchase your laptop elsewhere, please be sure to purchase the warranty they offer at time of sale!
Where is Wi-Fi Supported on campus?

What about insurance?
If you live at home, check with your homeowner's insurance carrier to make sure your computer is covered under the existing homeowner's policy. If you are a renter, it is highly recommended that you purchase renter's insurance. If neither of these options suit your situation, talk to your computer manufacturer about insurance policies they might offer.
