Financial Aid

The Fall Semester begins on Monday, August 29th and many students and their families are gearing up for the start of the semester.

***Listed below are a few topics that we think you may find helpful.

The Family Education Rights and Privacy Act is a law to protect the privacy of a student’s educational record. LHU employees are obligated to follow this law and are unable to discuss private educational matters with family members or other persons without the express written consent from the student. An “Authorization for Release of Information” was sent to each student with his/her financial aid award letter. It is also available online here. If it is the student’s intention to allow a parent or other person to discuss the financial aid information, please return this form to our office so that we may discuss matters openly with that person.

Finalizing Direct Student Loans

***new and transfer students
If it is the student’s intention to receive the Direct Student Loans he or she was awarded, there are two steps that must be completed by the student taking the loan prior to the loans being able to process:

  • Entrance Counseling
  • Master Promissory Note (MPN)

The student must complete both requirements by logging in with their FSA ID at

If the student does not want to pursue the loan(s) awarded, he or she may cancel or adjust the loan(s) by completing a “Loan Change Cancellation Form”, which is available here.

More information about Direct Student Loans can be found here.

Additional Loan Options

***In addition to the Direct Student Loans that have been awarded to the student who submitted a complete FAFSA for the 1617 year

There are two additional loan options available to students to cover educational expenses: The Direct PLUS Loan for Parents/ Graduate Students and the Private Alternative Loan.

  • Direct PLUS for Parents: A federal loan program available to the parent of the student. A parent can apply online at The parent must log in to the site with his/her FSA ID. A credit check is required to determine eligibility for this loan program. Approved borrowers must complete a Master Promissory Note and in some instances counseling is also required. Adjustments to approved PLUS loans can be made by completing the “Loan Change/Cancellation Form” available on the Financial Aid website under “Forms”.  If the parent borrower is denied the Federal Direct PLUS Loan AND the parent has opted not to appeal the adverse credit decision or seek an endorser, LHU will receive that information and automatically award the student additional unsubsidized Federal Direct Stafford Loan funds as long as there is room in the financial aid package. Additional information regarding PLUS loans for parents can be found here.
Please note: Graduate students can apply for a Direct PLUS Loan for Graduate Students. More information can be found here.
  • Private Alternative Loan: Alternative Loans are not a government program and are available through private lenders. It is important to research this option to determine which lender best meets the applicant’s needs. While the student is the borrower of this loan, they are most often approved only with a credit worthy cosigner. To view a listing of lenders used by LHU students, please go to More information about this loan option can be found here.

When applying for either loan option, the student/parent is urged to apply for the amount needed for the entire year. A borrower can apply for a loan now with estimated costs or they can apply later once the fall semester bill is received in late-July with finalized costs.

Finalizing Your Pennsylvania State Grant

The Pennsylvania State Grant is awarded to the residents of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania by the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA). Students who qualify and are unsure whether they have met all of the requirements to receive their grant for the 2016-2017 year, can view the status of the grant online by creating an account with PHEAA via the “Account Access” tab on their website at

Special Circumstances

The Financial Aid Office recognizes that the FAFSA may not always portray a clear picture of the student’s financial situation. If the FAFSA does not accurately reflect the current situation or the financial circumstances have changed since filing the FAFSA, a student may request a reevaluation of financial aid eligibility. Please contact the Financial Aid Office to discuss your situation. We will help to determine whether your eligibility for financial aid can be reevaluated due to your family’s special circumstance.
