Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania

Orientation 2008

Some desire is necessary to keep life in motion

Samuel Johnson

June 20 & 21, 22 & 23, 25 & 26, 27 & 28, 29 & 30

Welcome New Students and Parents,

On behalf of the orientation staff, we welcome you to Lock Haven University. College is a time to gain self-insight, to increase knowledge, and to prepare for a career. We believe that the parents, the university, and the students should cooperate to create a valuable learning experience for the student.

The University attempts to achieve this goal by conducting two simultaneous summer orientation programs, one for parents and one for the students. These programs will help you become familiar with academic programs, classes, how to register, campus life, facilities, resources, housing, financial aid, services, expectations and the community. You will have the opportunity to meet our administrators, faculty, students, and staff. It will provide you time to ask questions, express concerns, and to find out about programs to help new students and families adjust to college.

Because of the importance of this information, we strongly encourage your participation in June Orientation. Please remember that reservations are received on a first come, first served basis.

Once again, welcome to the “Haven” and we look forward to meeting you.

Dr. Carol  A. Latronica

Dean of Student Development

Lock Haven’s Orientation Program has been designed to familiarize new students and their parents with the University. It is our first opportunity to share with the traditions, standards, responsibilities and experiences for students and their families. Students will be able to learn about their academic responsibilities and required courses to complete the degree requirements. Student Orientation Staff will be available to assist students with their questions about campus life, offer activities to familiarize students with campus and begin friendships at Lock Haven University. New students who attend orientation have higher retention and increased success rates.

Parents are a very important part of our students lives and experiences. The summer program offers parents the opportunity to meet with other parents, staff, and faculty members. There are special events planned just for the parents. Those who have attended in past programs have been very pleased and have commented that it was a very important experience. The university wants parents to participate actively in what is offered to our students. If it is impossible for both parents, perhaps one of you may be able to join us. Lock Haven is a family oriented community, and we want you to feel a part of it.  The transfer program is  for the students only.

Participation depends on the selection of one of the sessions set aside for the Orientation Sessions. All Sessions are conducted during June. Each Session is a full 24 hours of activities. Registration is from 2:00 - 5:00 p.m. on the first day and the program will conclude with dinner on the second day at approximately 5:00 p.m. Registration for Sessions will be processed as they are received with paid reservations. Each Session has limited enrollment and once filled, a second or third choice will be honored. If you have a conflict, please contact the Dean of Student Development, 311 Sullivan Hall, Lock Haven PA 17745, or call (570)484-2317. If you are corresponding by mail, please include the student’s identification number (located on the mailing label) and telephone number with the area code. Both parents and students will be living on campus during the Session in University residence halls. Special accommodations can be made for individuals with special needs. Please note any special mobility or other needs on the mail-in registration form. The educational opportunity program students will have a special program put on by their director. Please call your director for specifics on checking in.

 Some Important Information

Living in a residence hall, even for a short time, will not be exactly like being home. The University will make every effort to make your stay with us a pleasant one. Parents and students will be housed in separate residence halls.  Participants should bring LINENS, toilet articles, soap, towels, a pillow, blanket, an alarm clock, and a fan. Dress is casual. Participants should bring comfortable walking shoes, an umbrella and a light jacket. A robe and slippers are essential for traveling back and forth to the bathrooms since there will be parents of both sexes on the same floor. Bathroom facilities, however, are not shared and will be designated separately. Please have students register first in North Hall and then proceed to Smith for parents.  Parking is available in the Parsons Union Bldg parking lot, below Smith Hall.  Signs will designate Orientation Parking areas.

 Check in

All students will report to North Hall  while parents will report to Smith Hall between 2:00 - 5:00 p.m. The parents’ residence hall is on the lower part of campus and parking will be below the hall. Dinner is provided in Bentley Hall until 5:30 p.m. The evening programs will start at 6:00 p.m. in Price Auditorium. You will receive your key and orientation pack containing important information for your use when you check in at Smith Hall.
