Today we examined several situations involving functions, rates of change, and lines.
We went over the syllabus today and then continued our discussion of functions, rates of change, and lines in chapter 1.
We continued our discussion on chapter 1 concepts and examined using the graphing calculator.
We finished our study of chapter 1, focusing on writing the equation of lines and examining some of the geometric properties of lines.
Today we just went over several homework problems in chapter 1. Students were also given Assessment #1 to take home and complete.
PowerPoint Homework Assessment #1
Today we submitted the first assessment and then completed Assessment #2 in class. We then began our study of the material in chapter 2, specifically discussing the concept of concavity.
PowerPoint Homework Assessment #2
We continued our discussion of the material in chapter 2, discussing quadratic functions, domains, and ranges.
We completed our discussion of chapter 2, concentrating on piecewise defined functions and inverse functions. Several homework problems were reviewed as well.
We discussed some homework problems in chapter 2 in order to prepare for the assessment on Thursday. We then began discussing Exponential Functions (chapter 3 in the text).
An in-class assessment of chapter 2 was given today.
We continued our study of exponential functions (chapter 3), discussing fitting data to an exponential curve and the effects of the parameters on the graph. At the end of class, Assessment #3 was returned and reviewed.
We completed our discussion on Exponential Functions (even though the computer projector was not working), examining some homework and then developing continuous growth. Assessment #4 was given as a take-home assignment.
PowerPoint Homework Assessment #4
Assessment #4 was submitted. We then went over several homework problems from 3.4 and discussed the exponential growth of money with respect to saving for retirement and such. After this, an inclass assessment was given on exponential functions.
We began discussing logarithmic functions today, discussing the concept, graph, and properties. Assessments 4 and 5 were then returned.
PowerPoint Assignment Assessment #5 Solutions
After taking a "pretend" quiz, we completed our discussion on logarithmic functions.
After completing Assessment #6, we began discussing chapter 5 in our text, Transformations of Functions and their Graphs.
After reviewing Assessment #6, we continued discussing chapter 5 in our text, Transformations of Functions and their Graphs, specifically examining vertical and horizontal stretches and compressions.
PowerPoint Assignment Assessment #6
We completed our discussion on transformations today, specifically discussing quadratic functions. Assessment #7 was given.
PowerPoint Assignment Assessment #7
There was no class held today. Students should be finishing up Assessment #7 given on Tuesday and should be listening to the following lectures on 6.1 and 6.2 before Tuesday's class. The PowerPoints are large and may take awhile to download. Also, be sure to hit F5 to listen to the narrated version (unless you just open them as opposed to saving them).

There was an assessment (#8) given at the beginning of class. Then, the last assessment (#7) was returned to students. Following this, we discussed transformations of the sine function. We finished the day with a 15 review of what was covered in the lectures notes while class was canceled last Thursday.
We continued discussing trigonometric functions, specifically developing the tangent, secant, cosecant, and cotangent functions.
We completed our discussion of trigonometric functions, focusing on inverse trig functions. Assessment #9 was given.
PowerPoint Assignment Assessment #9
We did not meet for class today. The PowerPoint lecture is posted for students to listen to. Students should also be working on Assessment #9 to be submitted on Tuesday, 11-24-09.
PowerPoint (for listening) PowerPoint (.pdf) Assignment
We continued our discussion of right triangle trigonometry by using the Laws of Sines and Cosines to solve triangles and then developing some trigonometric identities to help simplify and solve expressions and equations, as well as prove identities. Assessment #9 was then submitted.
Assessment #9 was returned. We then completed our discussion of trigonometry, concentrating on Polar Coordinates.
Assessment #10 was given in class and Assessment #11 was given as homework. We then discussed a few homework problems on Polar Coordinates and discussed compositions of functions, inverse functions, and the combinations of functions.
PowerPoint Assignment Assessment #11
Assessment #10 was returned and Assessment #11 was collected. We then finished discussing 8.3, the algebra of functions, and went over several homework problems from chapter 8. We then began to discuss chapter 9, focusing on 9.1 and 9.2.
Assessment #11 was returned and discussed. We then completed our study of Polynomial and Rational Functions, specifically discussing the long-run behavior, short-run behavior, and asymptotes.
