1-19-10

Today we introduced ourselves to each other and discussed the question "What is Mathematics?"

1-21-10

We began the day by talking about how to show that "a negative times a negative is a positive." We then carefully went over the syllabus for the class. After this, we continued discussing the topic of What is Mathematics. After the break, we discussed the division of two fractions problem from our homework and began working on our group project of delving into a secondary math concept and preparing a presentation on it.

1-26-10

We began the day by discussion the connection between the Pythagorean Theorem and the Law of Cosines. We then spent the next hour or so working on our content presentations. After this, we began our discussion on mathematics education and its history.

Class Notes          Concept Map Example          Assignment

1-28-10

Students gave their presentation on a secondary mathematics concept. These were not "lessons," rather they were simply an overview presentation on a given concept. The goal was to just get students to begin thinking about the content that they will one day have to teach.

                  Assignment

2-2-10

We began the day with a discussion of the difference between "square units" and "units squared." We then read three handouts to lead into our discussion of the history of math education by the decades, after which we discussed what had been written in the Google Doc we created. Finally, the students researched instructional strategies in the math classroom and then chose which ones their groups would research and present.

2-4-10

Students had 30 minutes to get organized for their presentation on an instructional strategy in mathematics, after which presentations were given. We then carefully covered the research paper assignment. After this, we formed new groups to discuss and share our findings on standards.

2-9-10

We spent the first hour of today discussing standards, both NCTM and PA. The next hour was spent in individual meetings discussing grades, while the others read information on the PA SAS system found on the PDE website (www.pde.state.pa.us). The last hour minutes was then spent discussing the Anchors/Eligible Content/Example Items and getting ready for the group presentation on Thursday.

2-11-10

There was a two-hour delay today due to the snow. Students presented their PA Anchor/Eligible Content/Example Items for most of the period. We then read an article on the Keystone Exams and the National Standards. After this, we discussed Field and demonstrated the use of the MS Equation Editor to use in one of the next assignments.

                Assignment

2-16-10

We began class with Steve teaching a 30-minute lesson on multiplying polynomials. We then discussed any issues related to using the equation editor and animation to create the PowerPoint slides for the PA Anchors from last week. We then took time to discuss initial knowledge of How Adolescents Learn Math and took an hour to research it via the internet. Finally, we discussed beginning the creation of our podcast of our reaction paper and a narrated PowerPoint of our PA Anchor.

2-18-10

We spent the first part of the day discussing our podcast, PowerPoint, and videocast assignments. The rest of the day was spent discussing Field and going over assignments to work on over the next month while we are out in the field.

3-23-10

We spent the first 30 minutes discussing what we have been observing in the Field over the past few weeks. We then discussed Learning Theories, reviewing and commenting on the Google Doc Presentation that we created as a class. We then discussed our diversity trip to Harrisburg coming up on Thursday by reviewing the itinerary and discussing teaching in an urban area.

Students spent the day in their Field Placements.

4-6-10

Today began the final five week push to the end of the semester. We began today with Steve demonstrating the difference between teaching a lesson with a behaviorist understanding of learning in mind versus a constructivist understanding of learning. The students then got into groups of two and chose a topic on which to consider the same thing. Ideas were then shared with the rest of the class. Following this, Steve reviewed the types of learning theories and discussed some motivation strategies. Finally, the Diversity Essay was discussed.

4-8-10

Brian Satterly taught a lesson today, as he is preparing for his student-teaching semester next semester. We then finished preparing for our presentations of the difference between approaching a concept from a behaviorist and constructivist viewpoint and then gave the presentations. After this, a handout of common math misconceptions/incomplete understandings was distributed and groups were formed to discuss how to address these misunderstandings from a constructivist standpoint.

4-13-10

We spent the day presenting and discussing the misconceptions sheet that was distributed last week.

                    Homework

4-15-10
We began class by doing an integer activity with tile spacers. We then spent quite a bit of time discussing lesson planning (Melissa will send Steve the notes) and critiquing the lesson plans found on the internet. After this, we spent some time playing around on livetext (http://c1.livetext.com). Finally, groups were formed in order to work on preparing a lesson plan to teach.

4-20-10

Most of the day was spent working on our lesson plans. We began the day by reading and discussing the Lesson Plan Reading that was given last time. Then, after explaining how to create a lesson plan in LiveText, we spent about 75 minutes working on them. After that, we figured out how to put our Diversity Essays in LiveText in order to submit them for a grade. Finally, the students completed the Faculty Evaluation forms.

4-22-10

Two groups taught their lessons today. Your homework is the same as Tuesday's.

4-27-10

One group taught their lesson today. We then took a little over an hour to discuss the capabilities of the graphing calculators. After that, time was given for groups to determine what calculator task and website they would like to demonstrate for the rest of the class on Thursday.
