Performance point system in Cell

A total of 20 points (10 from lecture, 10 from lab) can be added to your total earned points for the class.

Lecture:  A 4-point quiz will be given each lecture period that covers what that day’s lecture will be on.  The goal is to reward those who read ahead and are prepared.  Cumulative total is divided by 10 and that score is added to your total grade points.  A maximum of 10 points is possible. Even if you miss a class or two, you still can get the 10 points.

Laboratory: Maximum of 10 points available.

1 or 2-question quizzes in lab (each question is from one of the categories below).

If you get a problem completely correct (4pts), then you earn 1 performance point.  You don’t need to

retake a question in that category again.

All other (<4) points (best out of 2 attempts) in each category are added and divided by 6.

Maximum of 2 attempts per problem category (see below for categories).

Categories for lab:                                                                   Your score:

  1. Make up complex solutions
  2. Add to make final concentration of …
  3. Make a molar solution from scratch (powdered chemical)
  4. % solutions (agarose, SDS, etc.)
  5. Restriction digest setup
  6. UV spectroscopy to describe DNA (quantity, quality, contamination)
  7. Tm and stringency
  8. PCR master mix
  9. Pipetting chart for PCR experiment (sample problems)
  10. Conversions
