Personal Stuff
Tang Soo Do
I'm a second-degree black belt in Tang Soo Do, a type of Korean karate (the
martial art cousin of the more sparring-oriented Korean karate Tae Kwon Do).
My son is also a second-degree black belt and my daughter is a first-degree black
belt. I encourage any student at LHU, or
anyone for that matter, to try Tang Soo Do. You'll gain so much in
self confidence, coordination, and strength...you'll feel great about
yourself, have fun, and show future employers that you've done more than
just study in college.
Kayaking
I paddle a yellow Perception Acadia and my wife has a red Perception America.
We kayak when the West Branch Susquehanna River is about 50 F or
warmer...although we just bought fleece-lined wet-suit-like tops and bottoms to
get out sooner, and stay later in the year. Other great rivers to kayak
are Bald Eagle Creek and Pine Creek (see Bald Eagles and River Otters).
Trivia
- I was the novice fencing (foil) champion of Florida way back in 1977.
- I am a certified scuba diver (as is my whole family), though I like skin diving much better.
- I began my scientific career as a marine biologist in Florida.
- I described a species of sea slug from the Florida keys: Elysia
cornigera (the horned Elysia).
- I was an oilfield analytical chemist, and later an industrial sales
engineer, in Los Angeles for about 3.5 years after earning my B.S. in marine
biology.
- I live in an 1850's house that I constantly seem to be fixing...but I walk
to work and everywhere else for that matter. Lock Haven is a nice
small town.
- Other favorite sports: ping pong, tennis, pinochle.
- I like the TV series Dr. Who and Good Neighbors (both British).
- I've read The Lord of the Rings trilogy 6 times so far with my kids!
Best book ever written and best movie ever made (the extended version).
