Sensors in the the C-LEG read and adapt to the amputee's every move, taking measurements 50 times per   second.  The natural motion of the knee joint is emulated by a small hydraulic piston.  The force of the heel striking the ground sends information to a servomotor processor in the knee through sensor cables that run up the shin.  These signals dictate the angle and stiffness of the knee, which allows the C-LEG to adapt to uneven terrain.
