College Boxing

Is college boxing more dangerous than professional boxing?

The answer to that question is No,  college boxing is not as dangerous as it is at the professional level. Here is why:

At the college level, the players are forced to wear protective head gear.  At the professional level they do not wear head gear.  A family doctor from Chicago believes that college and amateur boxing is a safe sport.  These are some reasons why:

  • They wear mouth guards to protect fighters
  • They wear headgear
  • Thicker softer lined gloves
  • A rule of a 3-round fight limit (where the boxers only fight 3 rounds and the fight is called)
  • A standing 8 count, which stops a fight for eight seconds if there is no knockdown, which allows the referee to examine the boxer
  • The ringside physician can also stop the fight at any time if the boxer seems badly injured

Research shows that headgear protects a fighter against cuts and bruises.  Still there is no research that shows that it protects the brain.  Headgear however, may decrease the risk of future problems.
