HLTH301: CPR and Emergency Care
 
 This course is designed to certify students at the Professional Rescuer level.  A student who meets the standards

 will receive a Professional Rescuer certification card from one of the above organizations.  f

Course Requirements**:
HLTH105 -- Introduction to Health
HLTH128 -- Human Anatomy and Physiology I
HLTH130 -- Human Anatomy and Physiology II
** If a student has completed HLTH256 they may not take this course.

Course Objectives:

  1. Explain how the EMS system works and the first responder's role in the EMS system,
  2. Explain why one should follow the emergency action principles in any emergency.
  3. Identify at least six basic universal precautions for protecting yourself against infectious diseases.
  4. List four examples of how the athletic training program at LHU is implementing the OSHA regulations on exposure         to blood borne pathogens.
  5. Describe how to use the START system.
  6. Be able to list in correct order priorities of care in the primary and secondary survey.
  7. Demonstrate accurate blood pressure measurement techniques within +/-- 4 mm Hg of the instructor's measurement.

  8. Demonstrate rescue-breathing techniques on the manikin.

  9. Demonstrate first aid for a conscious and unconscious victim with an obstructed airway.
  10. Describe and demonstrate on a manikin how to use supplemental breathing devices.
  11. Recognize the signs of a possible heart attack and describe how to care for someone who is experiencing persistent chest pain.
  12. Identify the signs of cardiac arrest and demonstrate how to correctly provide CPR on the manikin.
  13. Become familiar with how injuries occur, factors effecting injuries, and how best to prevent injuries.
  14. Describe the signs of internal bleeding and demonstrate how to control external bleeding.
  15. Make appropriate decisions regarding care when given a scenario of an emergency situation in which a person is bleeding.
  16. Identify the conditions which can result in shock, describe the signs, and care for shock.
  17. Identify the four (4) main structures of the musculoskeletal system and at least three (3) common signs of musculoskeletal injuries.
  18. Demonstrate how to care for specific injuries to the head, spine, chest, abdomen, and extremities.
  19. Describe how to minimize movement of the victim's head and spine.
  20. Make appropriate decisions regarding care when given scenarios in which injuries to the head, trunk, and extremities are likely to have occurred.
  21. Identity at least four (4) general signs of sudden medical emergencies and describe appropriate decisions about care.
  22. Describe the specific principles of care for ingested, inhaled, absorbed, and injected poisons.
  23. Identify four (4) signs that may indicate substance abuse or misuse and general care for someone experiencing a reaction.
  24. Become familiar with the signs of the heat and cold related emergencies and how to care for each.
  25. Demonstrate accurate oral temperature measurements within 2 +/- mm Hg of the instructor's measurements.
  26. Make appropriate decisions about care when dealing with members of special populations.
  27. Describe how to assist with the delivery of a baby.
  28. Describe how to use verbal and nonverbal communication skills to provide care for victims of emotional crisis.
  29. Demonstrate how to perform at least four (4) methods of moving victims.
