The English Department offers a Bachelor of Arts degree in English (with a concentration in either Literature or Writing). The emphasis of the Literature concentration is on the study of influential literature. You will develop your ability to read with comprehension, to think critically, and to write clearly. The Writing concentration stresses the development of creative or applied writing skills through practice and exposure to important literature. Both areas will prepare you for careers in a wide variety of areas, such as business, government, professional writing, or publishing, where the ability to write well and think critically is essential. You also may choose to continue to graduate school for an advanced degree in literature, composition & rhetoric, creative writing, or law.
We offer Bachelor of Science degrees in Secondary Education in English and Secondary English Certification with Second Major in Special Education. If you are interested in teaching English or English and special education at the middle or high school levels, the BS in Secondary Education programs prepare you with an in-depth knowledge of writing and literature, as well as pedagogical theory and practice. We are proud to be accredited by the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) and the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education/Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (NCATE/CAEP).
English Department faculty have advanced degrees in literature, writing, and pedagogy, together with years of college teaching experience. We have published a wide variety of scholarly works, poetry, fiction, and creative non-fiction. Applied writing faculty have on-the-job experience.
